On 8th day of navratras, maaMahagauri is worshipped. Her name literally means, very white in complexion or highly fair. Unlike the previous form of Kalratri which depicted dark night, Mahagauri depicts the complete light. She is the mother Gauriwho enlightens the devotees and removes the fear of rebirth by granting salvation.
Since goddess Kalratrihad to severe penance on Brahma ji for the boon of transforming into Mahagauri, it is adviced to pray to Brahma ji also on this day. Mahagauri is the symbol of purity, serenity and enlightenment. She blesses the devotees with success and end to their worries. She is also named Shwetambardhara because of wearing white cloths and Vrisharudha because of riding bull.
This day is observed with the worship of goddess in form of nine little girls called kanjak or kanyapoojan, and offering them food and gifts.
Goddess Mahagauri is prayed with following mantras-
