Goddess form of first day worship is maaShailputri as daughter of mountain king Himalaya and Maina who got married to lord Shiva. She is also known asBhavani, Parvati or Hemavati. She was reincarnation of Goddess Sati who was wife of lord Shiva and burnt herself in the Yagyagni of her father Daksha.
The ritual starts with the Ghata (kalasha) sthapana. In many families barley seeds are sown which are harvested on the tenth day with offering the barley grass to Goddess and lord Rama. Fasting is observed which is optional. Durgasaptashati is started reading chapter wise or full everyday.
On first navratra chant “Om Devi ShailputryaiSwaha” for 108 times.or
Meaning: “I worship Goddess Shailputri to fulfill my wishes, who is adorned with half moon on her head, rides on a bull, carry a trident and is illustrious.”
As goddess ruling over Mooladhara or root chakra, worship of goddess Shailputri on first day, facilitates awakening of Kundalini and providing direction for it’s rising towards crown chakra to meet lord Shiva. At places ratrijagaranas are also arranged for worshipping goddess whole night.
